How to Apply Tool Presets with Pretool

Toolpath Cut Configs use Tool Presets from Fusion to match tools to specific machining roles. Use Pretool to quickly create these presets!

Fusion Tool presets to define cutting data for different materials or operations to individual tools. To use presets most effectively in Toolpath, we recommend using a consistent tool preset naming convention across tools. Cut Configs will be used to apply preset speeds and feeds for different materials and define which presets are used for different operations, so we suggest using a Material_Role convention.

To quickly create presets in Fusion tool libraries, use pretool.toolpath.com to populate a list of Material_Role presets in your Fusion tool libraries - using our recommended feeds and speeds for Aluminum, Low Carbon Steel, and Stainless Steel (based on a standard VF2SS with CAT40 and standard workholding).

To do so, follow the video above or refer to the directions below:

  1. Find the tool library you would like to add presets to in the Fusion Tool Library Manager.
  2. Filter to the tools you would like to apply presets for. For example, if your tool libraries include tools for all different materials, you may want to filter by flute count before copying the library to ensure presets are applied appropriately - for example, if you only cut Stainless steel using tools with 4+ flutes, you'll want to filter to tools with <3 flutes when applying your Aluminum presets.

  3. Shift Select all the tools shown and select "Copy":

  4. In a web browser, go to pretool.toolpath.com
  5. Click Paste From Clipboard to bring the copied tools into Pretool:
    pastefromclip
  6. Select the Material (1), Max RPM (2), whether to keep existing presets or generate placeholders (3) (which will create a list of preset names with no feeds and speeds), and your export format and name (4) in Pretool. This example will show the Fusion (copy/paste) export option.

  7. Click Generate to create presets.
  8. Click Copy to Clipboard to copy the new tool library with presets.
  9. In the Fusion Tool Library Manager, create a new, empty tool library or delete the tools from Step #2 from the original library. In this example, I created a new library called COMMON _ AL _ Toolpath Presets
  10. Right click in the Tool Library and select Paste from Spreadsheet to bring the tools and presets into Fusion:

  11. The tools will be brought into the library and the newly created Material_Role presets are visible in each tools Cutting Data:

  12. With these presets applied, you are ready to upload the tool library to Toolpath and create a cut config. Please see the articles below for assistance:
