Tool Library Management Overview
Create tools and edit tool geometry, data, presets, and holders in Toolpath Tool Libraries!
Using the Tool Table
After uploading a tool library, click on the library name to see the Tool Table. This table includes a summary of tool name, type, and geometry, as well as a list of the presets applied to each tool:
In the Tool Table, you can:
-
Filter and Sort the Tool Library:
- Apply Filters by clicking "Filter" in the upper left hand corner, selecting the field to filter on, the logic operator, and enter your value:
- Sort Tool Libraries by clicking on column headers.
- Apply Filters by clicking "Filter" in the upper left hand corner, selecting the field to filter on, the logic operator, and enter your value:
- Duplicate, Copy, and Delete tools through the kebab menu on the far right of a tool row:
-
Duplicate tools within the current tool library
- Copy tools between libraries (paste will show in this menu after a tool is copied)
- Delete tools permanently from the library
-
- Generate Presets and/or Edit in Pretool: These options will automatically create presets in the selected tool library. Please see How to Manage and Apply Tool Presets for more information on setting presets.
Adding Tools
To create a new tool within a tool library:
- Click the + Add Tool button in the bottom right hand corner.
- Select the Tool Type:
- After clicking on the desired tool type, the new tool will be added to the bottom of the tool list. Use the instructions below to edit the tool.
When creating new tools within Toolpath, a tool holder will automatically be applied based on the flute diameter:
- Tool Diameters < 1/8" will get an ER16 holder
- 1/8" < Tool Diameters < 1/2" will get an ER32 holder
- Tool Diameters > 1/2" will get an ER40 holder
Editing Tools, Presets, and Holders
Tools, presets, and holders can all be edited by clicking on a tool row to open the tool details on the right hand side:
- Edit tool geometry in the Geometry tab. When a change is made, Toolpath will prompt you to save the tool with the green save button:
- Shaft segments can be added in the list at the bottom of the Geometry tab, starting at the top and working to the bottom of the tool
- Edit preset speeds and feeds (and tool eligibility based on available presets) in the Presets tab.
- Hover over a preset for the Duplicate and Delete options (to the right of the AluWrought_Adaptive_rough preset name below):
- Click on a Preset name to edit the preset:
- After editing the preset, select Back to Tool, then the green Save button to confirm your changes.
- Hover over a preset for the Duplicate and Delete options (to the right of the AluWrought_Adaptive_rough preset name below):
- Edit tool holder geometry in the Holder tab.
- Enter the Vendor, Product ID, and Product Link.
- Define the tool holder geometry using the Height/ ∅ Upper / ∅ Lower table. Work down from the top of the holder - the top row is the highest section of the holder geometry.
- Enter the Gauge Length. The Gauge Length is the distance from the face of the holder that makes contact with the machine spindle to the tip of the cutting tool.
Toolpath does NOT currently support standalone holder import or keep a library of holders to apply to tools. To reuse holders, duplicate an existing tool using the holder and edit the cutting tool geometry, presets, and advanced tab information.
- In the Advanced tab, enter cutting tool data like including:
- type
- units
- vendor, product ID, and product link
- spindle rotation
- material
- Tool number and offsets
- Comments
- Manual Tool Change
- Break Control
- Save edits with the green Save button in the bottom right:
After editing a tool library, you will need to regenerate part reports using cut configs containing the edited library to reflect the changes. Please see How to Regenerate a Program for more information.
If new preset names were added during tool edits, they will need to be applied to the appropriate cutting role in cut configs containing the edited library. Please see Step #6 in How to Create Cut Configs for more information.
